Different types of rotary screw airends and drives:
The most common rotary screw airend is the single stage helical or spiral lobe oil-injected screw and these airends consist of two rotors within housing where the rotors compress the air internally. Oil injected airends operate with oil present inside and around the compression chamber where the oil inside the chamber seals air inside the airend housing, also lubricates the rotors and provides cooling from the heat of compression. And outside of the compression chamber, the oil lubricates and cools the bearings, gears, and airend housing.
The next is, two stage oil-injected rotary screw airends use two pair of rotors in a combined airend assembly and here the compressed air flows in series from the first stage to the second, increasing the overall compression efficiency up to 15% of the total full load kilowatt consumption. However, the oil used in each of these airends is removed from the air through a separator and is typically cooled by an air or water cooled heat exchanger but this is the case in both single and two stage compressors.
Oil free airends operate in much the same way except for the fact that no oil is present within the compression chamber of the airend also this requires that the rotors and housing be engineered and machined to very high tolerances to provide compression sealing inside the housing and prevent significant friction.
Applications:
Rotary screw vacuum packages can achieve up to 99% vacuum that is low vacuum and some examples of applications are dust suction, packaging, inspection instruments, bottle and tube filling, drying, degassing and filtration. Another one is a compressor where in a rotary screw compressor, air enters the compressor and is trapped between mating male and female rotors and compressed to the required discharge pressure.
